Two killed in separate shark attacks in Hawaii

Two people were killed in separate shark attacks in Hawaii on Sunday, according to authorities.

The first attack happened at around 8:30 a.m. local time near the town of Haleiwa on the island of Oahu, when a man in his 60s was bitten by a shark while swimming about 30 yards offshore, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports.

The man was pulled from the water by bystanders and taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

The second attack happened at around 2 p.m. local time near the town of Hana on the island of Maui, when a woman in her 20s was bitten by a shark while swimming about 50 yards offshore, Maui Police Department Lt. William Juan told the Associated Press.

The woman was also pulled from the water by bystanders and taken to a nearby hospital, where she later died.

Both attacks are under investigation by authorities.

(CNN) -- Firefighters are battling more than a dozen large fires burning across California, including one that has destroyed at least 1,500 structures in northern California and another that has forced the evacuation of about 20,000 people in southern California.

The Carr Fire, which started Monday afternoon in Shasta County, had burned through 88,000 acres as of early Wednesday morning and was only 5% contained, according to the latest update from the Cal Fire website. The blaze has destroyed at least 1,500 structures -- 1,058 of them homes -- and is threatening another 5,000 structures. Seven people have died in the Carr Fire, including a great-grandmother and her two great-grandchildren who were killed when flames swept through their Redding home on Tuesday night.

The Ranch fire, which is part of the Mendocino Complex fire, has burned through 44,300 acres and was 10% contained as of early Wednesday morning. The Ranch fire is burning near Lakeport in Lake County. About 12,000 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the Ranch fire.

The River fire, which is also part of the Mendocino Complex fire, has burned through 25,300 acres and was 20% contained as of early Wednesday morning. The River fire is burning near Ukiah in Mendocino County. About 7,000 people have been evacuated from their homes due to the River fire.
